The Rhultak

Sharing some similarities with amphibian creatures in terms of their appearance, Rhultaks are an exceptionally unique race. For the majority of their existence, they kept to themselves on their origin world, Khorgram, living in a clan based society and battling an enemy that kept threatening their survival for thousands of years.   Many times the Dhari offered their help but the Rhultak never wanted to be indebted to someone else and so they rejected the offer, trying to keep their world a safe place on their own. It wasn’t until one of the darkest hours on Khorgram, a few centuries ago, that the Rhultak accepted the Dhari’s support at the brink of their demise. Together, they managed to push back the enemy and ushered one of the most peaceful times for the race the goddess Sisara once brought to life.   After the end of the Long Night and the influx of deadly creatures everywhere, a huge part of the population split and left Khorgram, convinced they were needed throughout the universe, called to pay back their debt to the Dhari by defending others in their absence. Those who stayed continued to follow the old traditions by listening to the guidance of their elders. As warring as Rhultaks might come across at times, disputes are often resolved peacefully if only involving members of their own; they do tend to engage in friendly banter quite often though which has resulted in many altercations with members of other races who weren’t able to understand it for what it was.   The majority of Rhultaks that left Khorgram did so in order to help make the universe — and subsequently their own world — a safer place again and so many of them became what some like to call purposeful mercenaries. While mercenaries of other races, especially the Humans and Gniwers, often can be hired for a variety of things, some more shady than others, Rhultak mercenaries only pledge their support to a cause they morally can get behind.   It wasn’t just their proficiency in combat that came as a blessing for the universe though when access to the Ether Portals could be restored; some of the most renowned armor- and weaponsmiths can be found on Khorgram and while they rarely engaged in trades with other races in the past, in the aftermath of the Long Night things changed and the legendary Rhultak smiths accepted orders from all around.   Rhultaks have always been a warrior-like race, but while they mostly had to face the dangers on Khorgram, they quickly adapted to the threats of other worlds, constantly improving their arsenal of weapons and strategies. They are especially known for their strength, endurance, discipline, exclusively plant based diet and the fact that they rarely ever go anywhere without wearing full armor; a necessity that to this day is ingrained in their society from fighting for survival for so long.   As the only self-fertilizing race, Rhultaks are able to produce offspring on their own, and as a result, they decide for themselves what kind of gender — a concept mainly known in other races — they associate with. The life span of a Rhultak almost never surpasses the age of fifty, but contrary to other races, they also mature much faster, resulting in full adulthood at the age of fifteen.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Rhultak are ready to reproduce between the age of 15 and 20 and do so contiuously. In their fertile years a Rhultak can easily spawn dozens, though a lot them do not make it due to their violent nature.

Although rumors of Rhultak eating their young persist somehow, these rumors are false and speaking about this where a Rhultak can hear you is a quick way to end one's existence.   Whilst Rhultak tend to create relationships, they are completely self-fertilizing and do not require any other party to be involved in their reproduction. Some Rhultak scholars believe that the original Clan leaders who were gifted the soulcages by the Dhari, are the forefather of all current-day Rhultak. This has neither been confirmed nor denied by the ruling caste.

Growth Rate & Stages

After a gestation period of 3 months, Rhultak hatch from podlike eggs and are immediately provided with armor. Based on wealth of the parents, this determines the survival rate of most Rhultak. This is the only thing they get from their parents and after the first three years, they are expected to have earned enough money to purchase their own armor.

Once they become adults, their body actively creates bone to help support the growing limbs. Though Rhultak never grow a full skeleton, the combination of cartillage and muscle makes them the strongest and sturdiest of the known races.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Rhultak are divided in warrior clans with a very strict, military hierarchy. Top brass does not use their given names and will only use their title. When they die, either in battle or due to old-age, their pre-selected heir will inherit the title and with it their soulcage, a magical little device transferring the identity of all who wore it before them into the heir. This gives them full access to their predecessors memories, thoughts and feelings, ensuring continuation of Rhultak leadership at all times. Rhultak honor therefor demands that upon death of a Title bearer, all hostilities are temporarily seized untill the heir can be put in charge. This is but a small example of how devoted Rhultak are to survival and war, surpassing the limitations of their short lifespans.

The Rhultak Emperor and his nobility, use the same technology.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Rhultak prefer their homeworld of Khorgram, where they live in loosely organized clans. Clans of Rhultak are known to travel the other worlds, with the exception of Limera which is just too cold for them.

Average Intelligence

Rhultak are intelligent beings whose full focus lies on survival, honor and strength. This lead the majority of the universe inhabitants to believe Rhultak are just dumb power, but with Sisara as their goddes, the Rhultak have found ingenious ways to uphold their principles.

Civilization and Culture

Beauty Ideals

Rhultak beauty is shown in the intricacy of their armor. The more expensive and decorated one's armor is, the more it is appreciated by the other Rhultak. Scholars believe this originates in the fact that it is difficult to gain wealth and renown when one only lives a up to fifty years in an extremely violent lifestyle.

Gender Ideals

Rhultak do not have a designated gender and exclusively reproduce by themselves if the situation requires it. To faciliate relationships with the other races, they will sometimes define their gender based on what is required in that specific moment. For instance, when dealing with the Naru the Emperor will refer to themselves as Empress but when speaking to a Human King they will refer to themselves as Emperor.

As they understand this is a difficult to grasp concept for the other races, they are very courteous in helping them understand, nor will they be offended if they are addressed in a specific way, usually just going with the flow in such an instance.

The way Rhultak look is shrouded in mystery, primarily due the fact that Rhultak are only ever seen in their armor. Even if they've selected a partner to share the burden of life with, Rhultak only take of parts of their armor, a proof to their dedication to war preparedness.
